Roaming Stones

Roaming Stones represent an interactive experiment where stones inscribed with a unique code are distributed in the wild giving the people who find them the opportunity to log their discovery and redistribute the stone for others in the future.

The stones that have been distributed can be found below, along with any notes submitted by the people who have found them.

Painted Stone #100: Petroglyphs #2

Distribution Location: Chaco Canyon, New Mexico
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You’ve found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. It depicts petroglyphs found in the area of Chaco Canyon in northwestern New Mexico. My brother told me stories about Chaco Canyon for years, so it was great to finally be able to make it out there myself.

Painted Stone #101: Petroglyphs #3

Distribution Location: TBD
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. It depicts petroglyphs found… somewhere? It’s hard to determine what’s real or not online. In any case, I did pass through a lot of places on my trip that featured petroglyphs and I’m sure it would fit-in amongst them.

Painted Stone #102: Movie Manor

Distribution Location: Best Western Movie Manor (Monte Vista, Colorado)
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. On my first cross-country trip in 2019, I stayed at the Movie Manor in Monte Vista, Colorado. It is a motel with a drive-in movie theater behind it. The cool thing was that you could watch the movies from the windows in your room, piping-in the audio of the movie you wanted to watch… and all the rooms are named after movie stars! I thought it was an interesting place so I made a point of staying there again on the next trip that got near it.

Painted Stone #103: Fairyland

Distribution Location: Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. My friend and I planned on hiking the Fairyland Loop at Bryce Canyon during the trip, so I made something that at least has a fairy in it. Not sure it will go along with the surroundings there. We’ll see. (LOL… yes… I now see what the code says instead of “fairyland”… oh well.)

Painted Stone #104: Joshua Tree

Distribution Location: Joshua Tree National Park, CA
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. Joshua Tree National Park is my favorite park in the USA and I also love the U2 album of the same name. On a cross-country trip in the spring of 2022, I actually visited the spot where the photographs for the album were shot, near the western entrance to Death Valley National Park. I’d intended to visit that park on my 2023 trip, but due to the storms that hit the area over the summer, the park was completely closed. So, I decided to visit Joshua Tree NP on the way to San Diego, instead, camping with my aunt Diane along the way. The joshua tree on my stone is the one from the U2 cover.

Painted Stone #105: Saguaro

Distribution Location: TBD
Distribution Date: September 26, 2023

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. On my last cross-country trip, in the spring of 2022, I’d planned on visiting Saguaro National Park on the way from Phoenix to San Diego. Unfortunately, I got sick along the way and had to bypass it, so I made sure to stop there on my way home this time around.

Painted Stone #106: Gateway Arch

Distribution Location: Gateway Arch National Park, Missouri
Distribution Date: October 1, 2023

This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. The first stop from northeast Ohio to Utah was St. Louis, Missouri, so I picked-out a stone that would allow me to display the arch across two sides. The final result is not one of my favorites, but that happens sometimes.

Painted Stone #107: Sand Creek

Distribution Location: Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, Colorado
Distribution Date: October 1, 2023

This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. Over the course of my previous two cross-country trips, I’ve focused on the map looking for national park, monument and historical site to visit, primarily with the idea of sticking pins in maps and collecting mementos of my visit. Upon picking Sand Creek as a destination to visit and reading about the history of the location, I became aware that some places are not mere collectors items.

It’s important that we remember the parts of our past that hurt to remember and that we do our best to right those wrongs.

Painted Stone #108: Great Sand Dunes

Distribution Location: Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve
Distribution Date: October 1, 2023

This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. The Great Sand Dunes were the last stop on my first cross-country road trip before returning home, which was a sad moment on the trip because I didn’t want to have to come home. During my 2023 trip, however, visiting the dunes occurred at the beginning of my trip and I was determined to actually get my feed dirty with sand this time around. This stone depicts an abstract impression of the dunes against the prairies below and the sky above.

Painted Stone #109: Annular Eclipse

Distribution Location: Fremont Indian State Park, Utah
Distribution Date: October 1, 2023

This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. Upon returning from my first cross-country road trip in 2019, I’d expressed to some friends that we needed to meet in Utah to view the eclipse that would occur there in the fall of 2023. I forgot about it for years, until early 2023, when I was bored and thinking about what I could do to make things interesting again, at which point I remembered that declaration and began planning for a third cross-country trip. This stone (hopefully) commemorates what I was on that day at Fremont Indian State Park in Utah.

Painted Stone #110: Checkerboard Mesa

Distribution Location: Zion National Park, Utah
Distribution Date: October 1, 2023

This stone was made specially for a cross-country trip to witness an eclipse in Utah in October of 2023. One of my favorite features in Zion National Park is Checkerboard Mesa. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because a friend shared a video clip as he drove through the park that captured its unique surface, and then, many years later, I happened to pass it myself and find it stir my subconscious. This is my interpretation of the face of Checkerboard Mesa.

Painted Stone #111: Gunnison

Distribution Location: Gunnison, Colorado
Distribution Date: October 5, 2023

Kurt + Jennifer — Thank you for letting me stay with on my way across the country. I’d originally planned to make a stone depicting Miska and Grimm, but it was beyond my abilities, so I had to settle for something easier but more generic. Feel free to hold onto it or leave it somewhere for someone else to find. Good luck with the new furnace, the elk and best wishes in Ireland/Scotland!

Distribution Date: October 5, 2023

Painted Stone #114: RGB (Red)

Distribution Location: Mater Dolorosa Cemetery, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio
Distribution Date: September 29, 2024

You have found one of my roaming stones! This stone is part of the RGB Trilogy, which included a red stone (the one you’ve found), a green stone and a blue stone.

Today, I took it with me on a hike, planning to leave it somewhere around Happy Days Lodge in CVNP, when I saw a headstone in the Mater Dolorosa Cemetery covered in trinkets. It seemed like the perfect place.

I’d prefer that you send a message, but leave the stone. If you choose to take the stone, please send it back out into the world at some point… or Little Tommy McAnn might have to pay you a visit. Thank you!

Painted Stone #117: Fluorescent Patterns #1

Distribution Location: West Branch State Park, Ohio, USA
Distribution Date: August 26, 2024

You have found one of my roaming stones! This was my first attempt using fluorescent paint pens (meaning this stone glows under a black light). Unfortunately, it was a learning experience (for example, fluorescent pops more on a black background) so the results aren’t fantastic. In any case, I hope you enjoyed discovering it!

Distribution Location: Off Kendall Lake Trail, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio
Distribution Date: August 26, 2024

You have found one of my roaming stones! The forecast for today predicted a perfect late-summer Sunday in Northeast Ohio, so I planned a long, 11 mile hike through Cuyahoga Valley National Park to celebrate it. Along the way, I hid this stone of the trail for someone getting off the beaten path to find.

Painted Stone #123: Return (Natural)

Distribution Location: A Shrine in The Valley
Distribution Date: September 10, 2024

You have found the the last of three stones inspired by the Pink Floyd song “Chapter 24”. The song was written by Syd Barrett and refers to the 24th hexagram of the I Ching (or “Book of Changes”). The symbol on the front is the traditional Chinese text meaning “recover”, “come back” or “go and return”. This stone is the “natural” one of the trio because it features the natural color of the stone which was found in the same area that it was returned to after being decorated. Peace!

  1. Happy Halloween! This stone was actually started in October of 2023, but I didn’t get around to finishing it and it’s just been sitting there on my desk for the past year. I finally got around to it the other day, just in time to leave out somewhere on Halloween this year.

Painted Stone #40: Morning Sky in NEO

Distribution Location: Santa Elena Canyon Trail (Big Bend National Park, Texas)
Distribution Date: March 10, 2022

You’ve discovered the first stone in my Roaming Stones project. During the pandemic shutdown in the spring of 2020, I began painting stones and leaving them along the trails I hiked in Cuyahoga Valley National Park as a way to lift my spirits and hopefully do so for those who found them. The Roaming Stones project was conceived in anticipation of my 2022 cross-country road trip, and this was the first stone I created in four or five months, so it’s kind of a practice stone. Regarding its inspiration, in northeast Ohio, sometimes the morning skies are vividly pink and purple. It’s equally beautiful and disconcerting.

We were hiking for multiple days in Big Bend. We hiked Santa Elena trail and as we walked along the floor of the canyon I was peeking into a crevice looking for potential wildlife when I saw the stone. I was partially in water so I am happy the river was low enough to allow me to find it. At first I thought it was a phone case and then I reached in and grabbed it and noticed the URL on the back.

My wife wanted me to put it back but I told her I had heard about projects like these being done in other places. When I looked it up she was like “Oh” well that is cool.

We do a fair amount of camping with our RV and geocaching with our kids. We plan on hiding this again during our next visit to another State Park here in Texas and leaving it behind in a Geo Cache instructing the next folks to keep it moving on.

Thank you for doing this. It was a pleasant surprise and a really great story. Maybe we will find another in our travels.

Painted Stone #40: Nachos

Distribution Location: Mission San Jose in San Antonio, Texas
Distribution Date: March 10, 2022

This was the second stone I finished for the Roaming Stones project. It features a fairly standard design technique that I’ve used on previous stones, and the color scheme was inherited from the “Returning (Warm)” stone which was one of two inspired by the Pink Floyd song “Chapter 24”. Hopefully, it, um, brought a little warmth to your heart… unless you found it in a desert, which is a possibility.

Painted Stone #42: Returning (Warm)

Distribution Location: Off the Split Rock Loop Trail, Joshua Tree National Park
Distribution Date: March 10, 2022

You have found the first of three stones inspired by the Pink Floyd song “Chapter 24”. The song was written by Syd Barrett and refers to the 24th hexagram of the I Ching (or “Book of Changes”). The symbol on the front is the traditional Chinese text meaning “recover”, “come back” or “go and return”. This stone is the “warm” one of the trio because it features what to me is a warm color palette, so I hope that it brought a little, um, warmth to your heart!

Painted Stone #47: Bud’s Garage

Distribution Location: Petrified Forest National Park
Distribution Date: April 4, 2022

This is one of three stones whose color scheme was inspired by my friend Bud, who painted his garage in southern Minnesota using the same colors. He says he randomly chooses the order of the paints, but, when I try taking that approach myself, it never looks as good. I’d known Bud for quite a while via online channels, but never met him until I took my first cross-country road trip in the spring of 2019 and was able to make a short detour to his place in southern Minnesota where I got to see his artwork in-person, including his fantastic garage.

Distribution Location: Bud's Home
Distribution Date: April 4, 2022

Bud — This wasn’t really set-up for personal messages, so I’ll be removing this bit once you let me know you found the stone. Thanks for letting me crash at your place while passing through. It was nice to get into some longer conversations with you. During my previous visit, we sort of got into some things as well and I was reluctant to leave after only a couple of hours. If things work-out and you hit the road again, let me know if you head through my neck of the woods. Best wishes!

Distribution Location: Welcome to Roswell New Mexico art installment
Distribution Date: April 8, 2022

Believe! You’ve found The Grey Alien from my Cryptids & Aliens collection of roaming stones. This stone was made specifically because I knew that I’d be visiting Roswell, New Mexico, during my road trip in 2022 when I would begin seeding my roaming stones around the country. This was the first of the original trilogy of Cryptids & Aliens, along with Bigfoot and The Mothman. Be sure to check-out this stone underneath a black light because it literally takes-on a whole new light when you do so! Hope you enjoyed finding the stone and decide to send it back out into the wild at some point.

Believe! You have found Bigfoot! Well, maybe not the Bigfoot or even a member of the Sasquatch family of cryptids, but you can now tell your friends and family that you found Bigfoot, and how cool is that?!? To be real, though, what you’ve actually found is a part of my “Cryptids & Aliens” collection of roaming stones. While there are contenders (the Mothman, for example), Bigfoot is without a doubt my favorite cryptid. My friends, Dr. Kimberly Little and Dr. Scott Beekman, invited me along to attend a Bigfoot Conference in southern Ohio about a decade ago and ever since I’ve loved hearing new theories about the big guy. Hope you enjoyed finding him and be sure to check-out this stone under a black light!

Painted Stone #52: Cryptids & Aliens: The Mothman

Distribution Location: Athens, Ohio
Distribution Date: April 8, 2022

Kim + Scott — Thanks for having me and being fantastic guests. It’s always a fun time hanging out with the two of you. I made this stone for my cross-country road trip this year, but it didn’t make sense to leave it in the west, so I kept it with the intention of visiting Point Pleasant in the future and leaving it there. But then, it makes just as much sense to leave it with you. Feel free to hold onto it, maybe honor me with a placement on your cryptid bookshelf, or leave it somewhere on your next road trip. Thanks again for having me over!

Below is the original message for the stone:

Believe! You have located my favorite cryptid from the midwest: the legendary Mothman of Point Pleasant, WV! This stone is from the first trilogy of the Cryptids & Aliens collection of roaming stones. It was actually quite difficult for me to find inspiration for his depiction and it didn’t occur to me until after I’d finished it that this design is based-off the old Batman logo. Regardless, what you’ve found is one of my favorite stones that I ever created. Be sure to check it out beneath a black light because it gives-off an other worldly glow worthy of the Mothman itself!

Painted Stone #53: Gold + Silver Matrix

Distribution Location: Waco Mammoth National Monument Trails
Distribution Date: April 9, 2022

You have found the Gold + Silver Matrix roaming stone! As you can see, the top half is gold, while the bottom half is silver. No, this is not real gold and silver, but rather gold and silver spray paint covered in a matrix of multi-colored dots. And, honestly, it’s more of a “weave” than a “matrix” when I think about it. Regardless, I hope you enjoyed discovering it!

You’ve found my T-Rex stone. My inspiration was the belief that I’d be visiting Dinosaur National Monument on my 2022 cross-country road trip, but things changed and I left it in Rocky Mountain National Park, instead. I’m pretty sure that’s the closest park to DNM that I visited. Hope you enjoyed finding it, if you were the one to find it first. The Sprague Lake area is very busy and I wanted to make sure it wasn’t easily found… but eventually found. Congratulations, either way!

The Silver Dragon is a lawful good dragon in the Dungeons & Dragons mythology that can wield both a freezing and paralyzing breath as a weapon. It can also polymorph into a human or creature form. It would be wise not to mess with a silver dragon. Hope you enjoyed discovering the stone!

You’ve found The Golden Dragon… or at least the eye of the golden dragon. This was one of two, metallic-based stones that I made for my 2022 trip across the country. The view of the eastern side of Canyonlands National Park seemed like a perfect spot for the dragon’s gaze. Hope you enjoyed finding the stone and had a great time in Canyonlands.

Distribution Date: April 14, 2022

You’ve found the first in a trilogy of Akron-centric stones in my collection. Akron, Ohio, aka The Rubber City, has been my home for over the past 20 years. Along with the Goodyear Blimp, the rubber tire is a popular symbol of this fair city. I hope you enjoyed finding one of my stones!

Painted Stone #64: Akron, All-American City

Distribution Location: My aunt's neighbor's garden in San Diego, California
Distribution Date: April 14, 2022

You have found one of a trio of Akron-centric stones created for my roaming stones project. My adopted home of Akron has been recognized as an “All-America City” by the National Civic League four times (1980, 1981, 1995, 2008). The city has produced musical talents such as Devo, The Pretenders and The Black Keys, while Akron’s own squadron of Goodyear blimps grace the skies at sporting events across the country every year. Just north of the city lies Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which contains hundreds of miles of hiking trails, a ski resort and Blossom Music Center, all of which provide the people who live in the area an escape from their urban and suburban struggles. Geesh, I feel like I’m writing a commercial here. Anyway, hope you enjoyed finding my stone!

Sometimes, they get all four blimps out at the same time, which is really a sight to see. Along with rubber tires, the Goodyear blimp is a major symbol of the city I’ve come to call my home. Hope you enjoyed finding it!

Painted Stone #67: Lonz Winery

Distribution Location: Middle Bass Island, Ohio
Distribution Date: June 27, 2022

My grandparents had a cottage on the east point of Middle Bass Island for my entire life up until they sold it in 2004. Watching Lonz Winery grow bigger and bigger as the ferry got closer to its destination was one of my favorite parts of those visits, most of which involved heading back to the winery for a meal. These were always early dinners due to the rowdy nature of the crowds at the winery on weekend nights. After the tragic collapse of a terrace in July of 2000, the winery was closed and it was years before the state bought and renovated the property, retaining as much as it could of the crumbling structure. In the summer of 2022, I returned to the island for the first time in 18 years to spend a night camping at the state park and left this stone behind.

Painted Stone #68: Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial

Distribution Location: South Bass Island, Ohio
Distribution Date: June 27, 2022

My grandparents had a cottage on the east point of Middle Bass Island for my entire life up until they sold it in 2004. Perry’s Monument exists in most of the memories I have from my countless trips up to their place. The view of the monument as the ferry sailed around the western side of South Bass Island and the one from the southern shore of my grandparents’ land is burned into my mind. While visiting my grandparents as a child, one of my favorite things to do was take the Sonny S to South Bass Island and go up to the observation deck of the monument. In the summer of 2022, I returned to the Bass Islands to camp, one night on Middle Bass and one night on South Bass, leaving behind a stone at each.

Painted Stone #69: TCB

Distribution Location: Outside the Myers School of Art building in the University of Akron, where John attended art school
Distribution Date: July 14, 2022

You have found my TCB stone, which was made in memory of my friend, John Puglia, who was a fellow artist holding similar DIY values. I met John in the early 2000s shortly after moving to Akron, Ohio, and over the next ten years jumped at any chance to help him out with one of his creative endeavors and even collaborated with him on a couple as well. He was one of the most generous people I ever met and the world is a much smaller place without him.

You can view some of his work at: johnpuglia.com

NOTE: While the choice to keep this stone is completely up to you, I would appreciate it if you chose to re-hide it at some point in the future and help spread the memory of my friend John.

Painted Stone #73: Cleveland Guardians 2022

Distribution Location: Cuyahoga River Gorge Trail, Summit Metro Park, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
Distribution Date: October 22, 2022

You’ve found my stone commemorating the Cleveland Guardians winning the AL Central Division title in 2022. The stone was made the day before my brother and I camped on South Bass Island during their two-game sweep of the Rays in the Wild Card series on October 7th and 8th. My plan was to leave the stone on SBI, but I got superstitious and brought it back home for the ALDS. The Guardians were scrappy and took the ALDS to five games with the Yankees but couldn’t pull it off. Still proud of the team and hope they can take it further next season.
