Painted Stone #67: Lonz Winery

Dispersed: June 28, 2022
Location: Middle Bass Island, Ohio

The period of my life from 1975 to 2004 included many visits to my grandparents’ cottage on Middle Bass Island. As the ferry from Catawba made its turn around the southwest corner of South Bass Island, I’d start scanning the shores of Middle Bass for Lonz Winery’s iconic copper dome. Almost every visit to the island included a meal at the winery, including the night of July 1, 2000, when a terrace collapsed and resulted in the closure of the winery. In the summer of 2022, I returned to Middle Bass Island to camp for a night at the state park and leave behind this stone.
